In the 2023 elections for the Kharsia constituency, Umesh Nandkumar Patel faced a robust challenge from opponent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mahesh Sahu. Despite the tough competition, Umesh Nandkumar Patel emerged victorious with an impressive margin of 21,656 votes, securing 53.21% of the total votes cast (187,919). Patel's extensive track record and dedicated service as a minister in the Chhattisgarh government played a pivotal role in his re-election. With a total of 100,988 votes, his win underscored the electorate's continued confidence in his leadership and the impactful work he had undertaken for the development of Kharsia.

2018 was going to be another year of competition for Umesh Nandkumar Patel as after 5 years of journey in politics & leadership as Youth President of Chhattisgarh Congress Committee, it was the Assembly elections again. Umesh Patel was successfully heading the constituency of Kharsia following his father's mission & vision. Once again, people of Kharsia were going to choose their leader and this time BJP had a strong opponent Mr. O.P Choudhary who came into politics after resigning his post as an I.A.S Officer. He was equally withstanding as one of the toughest competitor from BJP in the field. But, like always Umesh Patel's work & progress in the development of Kharsia paid off and he once again made a remarkable win in 2018 elections by defeating O.P Choudhary with a margin of 16,967 votes and 52.92% vote shares.

The year 2013 was a major turn over for the lives of people of Kharsia as well as Mr. Umesh Nand Kumar Patel. Kharsia Consituency which is one among the Vidhan Sabha Constituency in the state of Chhattisgarh drastically lost their prime leader, the voice of the public of Kharsia; Shaheed Nand Kumar Patel who was killed by the naxalites in jheeram Valley naxal attack. Nand Kumar Patel's sad demise was a shock for all those who loved him and also brought the constituency under a huge loss. Kharsia now needed someone who could equally be responsible as Nand Kumar Patel was and there was only one person who could maintain the constituency after him. None other than Umesh Nandkumar Patel, who could lead his father's constituency & leadership with equal strength & hard work. As soon as Umesh Nandkumar Patel entered into politics, he started building trust in the minds of people of Kharsia. Due to his great dedication & will power he succeeded in maintaining his father's feet in Kharsia. Same year, he won the 2013 Assembly elections from INC with a huge margin of 38,888 votes and total vote shares of 60.70% by defeating his opponent Dr. Jawahar Lal Nayak from BJP.
